Easy Juicy Meatballs for Family Dinner
These easy homemade meatballs are tender, juicy and made with simple ingredients you can find at any supermarket. Everything comes together in one bowl, and the meatballs can be pan-fried or baked depending on what works best for your family.
They're also one of those recipes worth knowing because you can take them in so many directions. Serve them with tomato sauce and pasta, pile them onto mashed potatoes, tuck them into rolls or make a batch ahead for another busy night. One basic recipe, plenty of dinners.
Ingredients for Easy Homemade Meatballs
500 g beef mince
½ cup breadcrumbs
¼ cup milk
1 large egg
¼ cup finely grated Parmesan cheese
2 cloves garlic, minced
½ small onion, finely grated
1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon olive oil, for frying
Optional:
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
½ teaspoon paprika
Tomato pasta sauce, for serving
Extra Parmesan cheese, for serving
Step-by-Step Instructions
Soften the breadcrumbs. Add the breadcrumbs and milk to a large bowl. Stir together and leave for 2–3 minutes until the milk is absorbed.
Make the meatball mixture. Add the beef mince, egg, Parmesan, garlic, onion, Italian herbs, salt and pepper.
Mix gently. Use clean hands or a fork to combine everything until just mixed. Avoid squeezing or overworking the mince.
Shape the meatballs. Roll the mixture into approximately 20–24 small meatballs, keeping them roughly the same size so they cook evenly.
Heat the pan. Add the olive oil to a large frying pan over medium heat.
Brown the meatballs. Add the meatballs in a single layer and cook for 8–10 minutes, turning regularly until browned all over.
Cook through. Reduce the heat slightly and continue cooking for another 5–7 minutes, or until the meatballs are completely cooked through.
Add sauce if desired. Pour your favourite tomato pasta sauce into the pan and gently simmer the meatballs in the sauce for another 5 minutes.
Serve warm. Serve with pasta, mashed potatoes, rice, vegetables or crusty bread.
For Oven-Baked Meatballs:
Arrange the meatballs on a lined baking tray and bake at 200°C conventional or 180°C fan-forced for approximately 18–22 minutes, or until browned and cooked through.
Helpful Tips
Don't overmix the mince. Gentle mixing helps keep homemade meatballs tender rather than dense.
Grating the onion very finely adds flavour and moisture without leaving large pieces throughout the meatballs.
Make the meatballs similar in size so they finish cooking at roughly the same time.
Double the recipe and freeze a batch for an easy future dinner.
