Easy Pizza Dough for Homemade Pizza Nights
Making homemade pizza dough doesn't need to be complicated. This simple dough uses basic ingredients to create a soft, fluffy pizza base with golden edges, making it an easy starting point even if you've never made dough before.
Homemade pizza is also one of those meals that naturally brings everyone together. Put out the toppings, let everyone build their own section and don't worry if every pizza looks a little different. That's half the fun.
Ingredients for Homemade Pizza Dough
3½ cups plain flour, plus extra for dusting
2 teaspoons instant dried yeast
1 teaspoon caster sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1½ cups warm water
2 tablespoons olive oil
Optional:
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs
Extra olive oil, for brushing the crust
Step-by-Step Instructions
Combine the dry ingredients. Add the flour, instant yeast, sugar and salt to a large mixing bowl and stir together.
Add the liquids. Pour in the warm water and olive oil. Mix until a rough, slightly sticky dough forms.
Knead the dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead for around 7–10 minutes, until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
Let it rise. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover and leave in a warm place for around 45–60 minutes, or until roughly doubled in size.
Divide the dough. Gently press the air from the risen dough and divide it into two equal portions.
Shape the pizza bases. Roll or stretch each portion into a pizza base on a lightly floured surface.
Add your toppings. Transfer to a lined baking tray or pizza tray, then add pizza sauce, cheese and your favourite toppings.
Bake until golden. Bake at 220°C conventional or 200°C fan-forced for around 12–15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling.
Helpful Tips
Use warm rather than hot water. Water that is too hot can damage the yeast.
Give the dough enough time to rise until noticeably larger and airy.
Add flour gradually when kneading rather than making the dough too dry.
For a crispier base, preheat the baking tray or pizza stone before baking.
