Soft Homemade Dinner Rolls Made Easy
These easy homemade dinner rolls are soft, fluffy and golden on top, with a tender centre that's perfect for pulling apart while they're still warm. The dough uses simple everyday ingredients, and the method is beginner-friendly even if you haven't made much bread before.
A basket of warm bread has a way of making even a simple dinner feel generous. Serve these alongside soup or a roast, use them to mop up gravy, or place them in the middle of the table with butter and let everyone pull one apart for themselves.
Ingredients for Homemade Dinner Rolls
3½ cups plain flour, plus extra if needed
2¼ teaspoons instant yeast
2 tablespoons caster sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup warm milk
¼ cup warm water
60 g unsalted butter, melted
1 large egg
Optional:
1 tablespoon melted butter, for brushing after baking
Flaky salt, for topping
Step-by-Step Instructions
Combine the dry ingredients. Add 3 cups of the flour, instant yeast, sugar and salt to a large mixing bowl and stir together.
Add the wet ingredients. Pour in the warm milk, warm water, melted butter and egg.
Mix the dough. Stir until a soft, slightly sticky dough begins to form. Gradually add the remaining flour as needed.
Knead until smooth. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for approximately 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
Let the dough rise. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel or reusable cover. Leave somewhere warm for approximately 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Divide the dough. Gently press the air from the risen dough and divide it into 12 roughly equal portions.
Shape the rolls. Roll each portion into a smooth ball and arrange in a lightly greased baking dish, leaving a little space between each one.
Rise again. Cover and leave for another 30 minutes, or until the rolls look noticeably puffy and are beginning to touch.
Preheat the oven. Heat your oven to 190°C conventional or 170°C fan-forced.
Bake until golden. Bake the dinner rolls for approximately 16–20 minutes, until risen and beautifully golden on top.
Brush with butter. For softer, glossy tops, brush the warm rolls lightly with melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven.
Serve warm. Allow to cool for a few minutes, then pull apart and serve.
Helpful Tips
Make sure the milk and water are warm, not hot. Very hot liquid can damage the yeast.
Add only enough flour to create a manageable dough — too much flour can make the finished rolls dense.
Give the dough enough time to rise; a cooler kitchen may require a little longer.
Brush the freshly baked rolls with butter for an extra-soft top.
Why This Recipe Works
Simple ingredients make these rolls approachable for beginner bread makers.
Two rises help create a soft and fluffy texture.
Milk, butter and egg enrich the dough and keep the rolls tender.
The rolls require no special bread-making equipment.
They're versatile enough for everyday dinners and larger gatherings.
Leftover rolls can be reheated or used for sandwiches the following day.
