Easy Homemade Chicken Burgers

These easy chicken burgers are made with juicy seasoned chicken breast, toasted burger buns and simple fresh toppings. They're ready in under 30 minutes and give you an easy homemade alternative when the family feels like burgers without ordering takeaway.

Put everything on the table and let everyone build their burger exactly how they like it. Extra sauce for one, no tomato for another, double cheese for somebody else — family dinner doesn't have to look identical on every plate to bring everyone together.

Ingredients for Chicken Burgers

  • 2 large chicken breasts

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  • 4 burger buns

  • 4 cheese slices

  • Lettuce leaves

  • 1 tomato, sliced

  • ½ red onion, thinly sliced

Optional:

  • Mayonnaise

  • Aioli

  • BBQ sauce

  • Avocado

  • Pickles

  • Extra cheese

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the chicken. Slice each chicken breast horizontally to create four thinner pieces. Gently pound any particularly thick sections so the chicken cooks evenly.

  2. Season the chicken. Coat the chicken with olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper.

  3. Heat the pan. Place a large frying pan over medium-high heat and allow it to become hot.

  4. Cook the chicken. Add the chicken and cook for around 5–6 minutes per side, depending on thickness, until golden and cooked through.

  5. Add the cheese. Place a slice of cheese over each piece of chicken during the final minute of cooking and allow it to melt.

  6. Toast the buns. Lightly toast the cut sides of the burger buns in the pan until golden.

  7. Build the burgers. Spread your favourite sauce over the buns, then add lettuce, chicken, tomato and red onion.

  8. Serve immediately. Add the top bun and serve while the chicken is hot and juicy.

Helpful Tips

  • Make the chicken pieces an even thickness so they cook at the same rate.

  • Avoid pressing down on the chicken while cooking, as this can push out moisture.

  • Use a meat thermometer if available — chicken should reach 75°C in the centre.

  • Toasting the buns helps stop sauces and juicy toppings from making them soggy.
