Dear Gen FX,

There are many things that can make us tired.

Some tiredness disappears after a good night’s sleep. But there is another kind that can stay with us — the weight of worry, responsibility, disappointment, guilt or trying to carry everything ourselves.

In Matthew 11, Jesus speaks about people who had seen His works but still refused to turn to God. Then He gives an invitation to those carrying heavy burdens.

Come to Him, learn from Him, and find rest.

THE READING, EXPLAINED

Jesus begins by speaking strongly against the towns of Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum.

These places had witnessed many of His miracles. They had seen the signs of God’s power among them, but many still did not repent.

Jesus explains that seeing His works brought responsibility. The signs were not simply something impressive to witness. They were pointing people towards Him and calling them to respond.

Jesus then praises the Father and speaks about the unique relationship between the Father and the Son.

After this comes His invitation:

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

Jesus tells those who come to Him to take His yoke upon them and learn from Him because He is gentle and humble in heart.

Then He promises:

“You will find rest for your souls.” — Matthew 11:29

WHAT THIS THEME IS POINTING TO

The signs Jesus performed were meant to lead people towards faith, repentance and a deeper understanding of who He is.

Some people saw the signs but did not respond.

That helps us understand why Jesus’ invitation to rest matters.

Jesus is not simply offering a temporary escape from difficult circumstances. He calls people to come to Him, take His yoke and learn from Him.

A yoke represented something carried for work. Jesus does not promise a life without responsibility, obedience or difficulty. Instead, He invites us to stop trying to live apart from Him.

The rest Jesus offers begins with trusting Him.

WHERE THIS MEETS REAL LIFE

Imagine carrying a heavy bag everywhere you go.

At first, you might manage it easily. But the longer you carry it, the heavier it seems to become. Eventually, even ordinary things become difficult because you are carrying so much weight.

Life can feel like that.

We carry expectations, worries about the future, mistakes from the past, responsibilities at home, pressure at school or work, and problems we think we have to solve alone.

Jesus does not tell us simply to become stronger and keep carrying everything ourselves.

He says, “Come to me.”

Finding rest for our souls does not mean every responsibility disappears. It means we no longer carry life as though everything depends entirely upon us.

We learn to walk with Christ, trust His direction and allow Him to shape the way we carry what is before us.

ONE THING TO HOLD ONTO

True rest is not found in having nothing to carry, but in learning to carry life with Jesus.

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord Jesus, when we are tired and burdened, teach us to come to You. Help us to trust You, learn from You, and find rest for our souls. Amen.
