Dear Gen FX,

There is a turning point in this passage. Jesus begins to speak openly about His suffering, His death, and His resurrection.

He is not walking toward popularity. He is walking toward the cross.

THE READING, EXPLAINED

In Matthew 16, Jesus tells His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, suffer many things, be killed, and on the third day be raised.

Peter reacts immediately. He pulls Jesus aside and says this should never happen.

But Jesus responds firmly. Peter is thinking in human terms — comfort, safety, success. Jesus is thinking in God’s terms — obedience, sacrifice, redemption.

Then Jesus says something direct to all who follow Him:
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

The path of Christ moves toward suffering before glory.

WHAT THIS THEME IS POINTING TO

“Towards the Darkness” does not mean moving toward evil. It means moving toward the hard road that obedience sometimes requires.

It does not mean seeking pain for its own sake.
It does not mean losing hope.

It means trusting God even when the path ahead looks costly.

Jesus knew what waited in Jerusalem. He did not turn away. He moved forward because the mission required it.

Holy Week begins with cheering crowds. It ends with a lone prayer in Gethsemane. Faith does not always stay in the spotlight.

WHERE THIS MEETS REAL LIFE

Think of an athlete preparing for a difficult competition. The training is not easy. Early mornings, sore muscles, discipline. The hard work feels uncomfortable, but it leads somewhere meaningful.

Following Christ can feel similar. Sometimes obedience means choosing what is right even when it costs you popularity, comfort, or approval.

The darkness is not the end of the story. It is part of the journey toward resurrection.

ONE THING TO HOLD ON TO

Following Jesus may lead through difficulty, but it always leads with purpose.

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, give us courage to follow You even when the road is hard.
Help us trust Your purpose beyond what we can see.
Strengthen us to walk faithfully each day.

Signing off,
Alofa Tunoa
