Gen FX — Too Busy to Be Bored; Too Busy to Stop

A special Gen FX reflection on today’s EFKS message.

Dear Gen FX,

Being busy can sometimes feel like a sign that life is going well.

There is always something to do, somewhere to go, someone to answer, another responsibility to finish or another goal to reach. We can become so used to being busy that stopping feels uncomfortable.

Ecclesiastes 3 reminds us that life was never meant to consist of only one kind of season.

There is a time for doing.

And there is also a time for stopping.

THE READING, EXPLAINED

Ecclesiastes begins with one of the Bible’s most familiar statements:

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1

The writer then gives us a series of contrasts.

There is a time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to uproot. A time to weep and a time to laugh. A time to mourn and a time to dance.

There is a time to keep and a time to throw away. A time to remain silent and a time to speak. A time for war and a time for peace.

These verses describe the changing experiences of human life.

Not every season will feel the same, and not every season requires the same response from us.

Sometimes we need to work.

Sometimes we need to wait.

Sometimes we celebrate.

Sometimes we grieve.

Wisdom includes recognising the season we are in and responding appropriately.

WHAT THIS THEME IS POINTING TO

Our weekly theme is nurture.

To nurture something means giving it the attention, care and conditions it needs to grow.

That includes our faith, our relationships, our responsibilities and even ourselves.

But nurturing requires time.

If every moment of our lives is filled, we may be constantly active without actually caring well for the things God has placed in front of us.

Busyness can even become a way of avoiding what needs our attention.

Ecclesiastes reminds us that God has created life with different seasons and rhythms. There are times when we need to move forward, but there are also times when we need to slow down, listen, reflect, pray or simply be present.

Rest is not always wasted time.

Neither is silence.

Neither is grieving.

There is a time for each.

WHERE THIS MEETS REAL LIFE

Think about a garden.

A healthy garden does not grow because someone constantly pulls at the plants trying to make them grow faster.

There is a time to plant. A time to water. A time to prune. A time to wait. Eventually, there is a time to gather what has grown.

Our lives also need different kinds of care.

If we are always busy, we can miss what needs nurturing around us. We may be physically present with people but mentally somewhere else. We may attend church but never create space to reflect on what God is teaching us. We may move from one responsibility to another without noticing that we are becoming exhausted.

There is nothing wrong with having a full life.

But there is a difference between living faithfully and simply staying busy.

Sometimes the faithful thing is to work.

Sometimes the faithful thing is to stop.

Ecclesiastes invites us to pay attention to the season we are in and ask whether our time is being used for what truly matters.

ONE THING TO HOLD ONTO

We do not have to fill every moment; wisdom is learning when to move, when to wait, and what God is asking us to nurture in this season.

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, give us wisdom for every season of life. Help us know when to act, when to rest, and how to nurture what You have placed in our care. Amen.
