Dear Gen FX,

Some moments make everything else seem less important.

In Matthew 17, Peter, James and John are taken up a mountain with Jesus. What happens there gives them an extraordinary glimpse of who Jesus truly is.

His appearance changes. Moses and Elijah appear. A bright cloud covers them. Then the voice of God directs their attention to the one person who matters most:

Jesus.

THE READING, EXPLAINED

Jesus takes Peter, James and John up a high mountain by themselves.

There He is transfigured before them:

“His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.” — Matthew 17:2

Then Moses and Elijah appear, speaking with Jesus.

Their presence is significant. Moses is closely associated with the Law, while Elijah represents the prophets. Together, they point towards the story and promises of God that find their fulfilment in Christ.

Peter responds by offering to build three shelters — one for Jesus, one for Moses and one for Elijah.

But while Peter is still speaking, a bright cloud overshadows them, and the voice of God says:

“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” — Matthew 17:5

The disciples fall on their faces in fear.

Jesus approaches them, touches them and tells them to rise and not be afraid.

When they look up again, Matthew gives us one simple but important detail:

“They saw no one but Jesus only.” — Matthew 17:8

As they come down the mountain, Jesus tells them not to speak about what they have seen until after His resurrection. Their conversation then turns to Elijah, and Jesus explains that Elijah has already come — pointing them towards John the Baptist and ultimately towards His own coming suffering.

WHAT THIS THEME IS POINTING TO

The Transfiguration reveals the identity and authority of Jesus.

The disciples already knew Jesus as their teacher and had witnessed His miracles. But on the mountain, they are given a glimpse of His glory.

Moses and Elijah are important figures in the history of God's people, but the voice from heaven does not tell the disciples to listen equally to all three.

God says of Jesus:

“Listen to him.”

That helps us understand what is important.

Our faith is not centred simply on traditions, religious experiences or even great figures from the past. All of these must ultimately direct our attention towards Christ.

The disciples wanted to remain in an extraordinary moment on the mountain, but they could not stay there.

They had to come back down and continue following Jesus.

The same is true for us.

Faith is not only about powerful moments when God feels especially close. It is also about listening to Jesus when we return to ordinary life.

WHERE THIS MEETS REAL LIFE

Think about adjusting the focus on a camera.

Several things may appear in the frame, but adjusting the focus makes it clear what the picture is really centred on.

Life can become crowded in the same way.

There are responsibilities, ambitions, relationships, opinions, traditions and countless voices competing for our attention. Some of these things may be good and important.

But Matthew 17 brings Jesus back into focus.

God's words on the mountain are simple:

“Listen to him.”

When we are unsure what matters most, we return to Christ. We listen to His words, look at His life and allow Him to shape our decisions.

The mountain experience eventually ended.

But Jesus remained.

ONE THING TO HOLD ONTO

When everything competes for our attention, God directs our focus back to Jesus: “This is my beloved Son… listen to him.”

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord Jesus, help us to keep our attention centred on You. Teach us to listen to Your words, recognise Your authority, and faithfully follow You. Amen.
