Dear Gen FX,
Grace begins with what God gives, not with what we earn.
In his letter to Titus, Paul reminds believers of what their lives were once like and then points them towards what God has done for them through Jesus Christ.
At the centre of this change is one of God’s gracious gifts: the Holy Spirit, given generously to renew us and lead us into a new way of life.
THE READING, EXPLAINED
Paul begins by reminding believers that they were not always living according to God’s ways.
He describes a life marked by foolishness, disobedience, harmful desires, envy and hatred. Then the direction of the passage changes:
“But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us.” — Titus 3:4–5
Paul makes it clear that salvation did not come because people had finally done enough good things to deserve it.
God saved them because of His mercy.
Paul describes this salvation as a washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom God poured out generously through Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Because of God’s grace, believers are justified and given the hope of eternal life.
Paul then tells Titus to emphasise these truths so that those who have trusted God will devote themselves to doing what is good.
WHAT THIS THEME IS POINTING TO
The Holy Spirit is not a reward we receive for becoming good enough.
He is a gracious gift from God.
Titus reminds us that God acts first. He shows kindness. He gives mercy. He saves. He renews. He gives the Holy Spirit generously through Jesus Christ.
That is alofa tunoa — grace.
But grace does not leave us unchanged.
The same passage that tells us we are saved because of God’s mercy also calls believers to devote themselves to doing good. Good works are not the price we pay to receive grace. They are part of the new life that grows from receiving it.
The Holy Spirit works within us, renewing us so that our lives increasingly reflect the grace we have been given.
WHERE THIS MEETS REAL LIFE
Think about receiving a gift that you could never afford to buy for yourself.
You did not earn it, and you cannot claim that it belongs to you because of something you achieved. Someone chose to give it to you.
The right response is not to pretend you earned the gift. It is to receive it with gratitude and allow that generosity to mean something.
God’s grace works in a far greater way.
We cannot earn salvation, and we cannot transform ourselves into the people God calls us to be through effort alone.
God gives what we cannot provide for ourselves.
Through the Holy Spirit, He continues His work of renewal within us, shaping how we think, speak, serve and live.
ONE THING TO HOLD ONTO
The Holy Spirit is God’s gracious gift, renewing us to live the new life that His mercy has made possible.
CLOSING PRAYER
Lord, thank You for saving us by Your mercy and giving us Your Holy Spirit. Renew our lives and help us to reflect Your grace in the way we live. Amen.
