Dear Gen FX,

Romans 8 begins with words of freedom:

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” — Romans 8:1

Paul has spent much of Romans explaining the reality of sin and humanity’s need for salvation. Now he turns our attention towards the new life made possible through Jesus Christ.

This new life is not something we are expected to live through our own strength. God gives us His Spirit, who lives within us and leads us as children of God.

THE READING, EXPLAINED

Paul begins by explaining that those who are in Christ are no longer condemned.

What humanity could not accomplish because of sin, God accomplished by sending His Son. Through Christ, sin has been condemned, and believers are called to live according to the Spirit rather than according to the flesh.

Paul contrasts these two ways of living.

To set our minds on the flesh means allowing sinful human desires to direct us. To set our minds on the Spirit means allowing our lives to be shaped by God.

Paul writes:

“For to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” — Romans 8:6

The Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead now lives within those who belong to Christ.

But Paul goes even further.

Those who are led by the Spirit of God are called children of God. We have not received a spirit that returns us to fear. Instead, through the Holy Spirit, we are welcomed into God's family and can call Him “Abba! Father!”

The Spirit assures us that we belong to God and that, as His children, we are also heirs with Christ.

WHAT THIS THEME IS POINTING TO

Life in the Spirit is more than simply knowing that the Holy Spirit exists.

It is a new way of living.

The Spirit changes the direction of our lives — what shapes our thinking, what we desire and how we respond to God.

This does not mean Christians suddenly become perfect or never struggle with sin again. Paul is describing a life that is now under a different direction.

Before, sin ruled.

In Christ, we have been set free, and the Holy Spirit leads us towards life.

There is also something deeply personal in this passage. The Spirit does not only change our behaviour; He assures us of our relationship with God.

We are not strangers trying to earn a place in God's household.

Through Christ, we are His children.

WHERE THIS MEETS REAL LIFE

Think about a compass.

A compass does not remove every obstacle from a journey. There may still be steep hills, difficult paths and moments when you are unsure of your surroundings.

But the compass continually points you in the right direction.

Life in the Spirit can be understood in a similar way.

Following Christ does not mean every struggle disappears. We will still face temptation, difficult decisions, disappointment and uncertainty.

But we are no longer left to find our direction alone.

The Holy Spirit works within us, directing our hearts towards God and shaping us to live according to His ways.

And when we stumble, Romans 8 reminds us where we stand:

There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

ONE THING TO HOLD ONTO

Life in the Spirit means we are no longer defined by condemnation, but led by God as His children.

Lord, thank You for giving us Your Holy Spirit. Lead our lives, shape our hearts, and help us remember that through Christ, we belong to You. Amen.
