Names: People and Places

Genesis 2:19–25
(EFKS Tusi Faitau Aso)

Dear Gen FX,

From the very beginning, names mattered. Before cities were built or nations formed, God paused creation long enough to name what He had made. This moment tells us something important about how God works with people, not just around them.

The reading, explained

In Genesis 2, God brings the animals to Adam and allows him to name them. This is not random or rushed. Naming is an act of responsibility and relationship. Adam is not creating life, but he is invited to take part in caring for it.

Through this moment, we see God trusting humanity with His creation and giving people a role that carries meaning and purpose.

What this theme is pointing to

Naming is about more than labels.
It shows relationship.
It shows responsibility.
It shows intention.

This passage does not suggest humans have control over creation, but that they are called to steward it carefully and thoughtfully, in partnership with God.

Where this meets real life

Think about the difference between something that is named and something that is ignored. When something has a name, it is noticed and valued. In everyday life, we care more for what we recognise and understand.

In the same way, faith grows when we take responsibility for what God places in our care — people, places, and choices.

One thing to hold on to

Being invited to name is being invited to take responsibility.

Closing prayer

God, thank You for trusting us with what You have made.
Help us care for people and places with wisdom and respect.
Teach us to honour what You place in our hands.

Signing off,
Alofa Tunoa
