A special Gen FX reflection on today’s EFKS message.
Weekly EFKS Theme:
Emmanuel — God With Us
📖 Bible Reading: Matthew 2:16–18
(EFKS Tusi Faitau Aso)
Dear Gen FX,
Today’s reading is not an easy one. It speaks of fear, violence, and deep loss. This part of the Christmas story reminds us that Jesus entered a world that was already broken.
Scripture does not avoid pain — it names it.
The Reading, Explained
Matthew describes King Herod’s anger and the tragic outcome that followed. Children were harmed, families grieved, and cries of sorrow filled the land. This passage echoes words from the prophet Jeremiah, giving voice to mourning and lament.
It is important to notice that the Bible does not rush past this moment. It allows space for grief. It acknowledges that injustice and suffering were real, even as God’s saving plan was unfolding.
This tells us something honest about the world Jesus was born into.
What This Theme Is Pointing To
The theme Flight to Safety reminds us that God’s protection does not always look dramatic or public. Sometimes safety comes quietly — through warning, obedience, and difficult decisions.
Even in this dark moment, Emmanuel remains true. God was not absent. He was at work protecting Jesus and fulfilling His promises, even when it was hard to see.
God’s presence does not mean the absence of suffering. It means He is faithful through it.
Where This Meets Real Life
Many young people grow up thinking faith means life will be smooth or protected from hardship. But real life tells a different story.
There are seasons where things feel unsafe — emotionally, mentally, or physically. There are moments of loss, fear, and confusion that don’t have easy answers.
This passage reminds us that faith makes room for lament. It allows us to grieve honestly while still trusting that God is near.
One Thing to Hold Onto
God is with us, not only in joy and celebration, but also in sorrow and uncertainty.
Closing Prayer
God, be close to those who are hurting and afraid.
Help us trust Your presence, even when life feels heavy.
Amen.
