Names: People and Places

📖 Bible Reading:
Isaiah 43:1–7
(EFKS Tusi Faitau Aso)

Dear Gen FX,

Names matter more than we often realise. A name can carry meaning, history, and belonging. Today’s theme reminds us that faith begins not with labels placed on us by others, but with who God says we are.

The reading, explained

In Isaiah 43, God speaks to His people during a time of fear and uncertainty. They are facing loss, exile, and the feeling of being forgotten. God responds clearly and personally: “I have called you by name; you are mine.”

This is not a general statement. It is direct and intentional. God names His people to remind them that they belong to Him, even when everything around them feels unstable.

What this theme is pointing to

Being “called by name” means being known, claimed, and valued.
It does not mean life will be easy.
It does not mean hardship disappears.

It means that identity comes from God, not from circumstance, failure, or what others say.

Where this meets real life

Think about how it feels when someone remembers your name without being reminded. It signals respect and care. In the same way, God does not see us as a crowd or a number. He knows us individually.

When name-calling, labels, or expectations try to define us, this passage reminds us that God’s voice comes first.

One thing to hold on to

You are not defined by what you are called by others, but by the One who calls you by name.

Closing prayer

God, thank You for knowing us personally.
Help us remember who we belong to when voices around us confuse us.
Teach us to trust Your name for us above all others.

Signing off,
Alofa Tunoa
