Dear Gen FX,

Sometimes the problem is not that something is missing. It is that something is preventing us from seeing clearly.

In 2 Corinthians 3, Paul uses the image of a veil to explain what happens when people turn to Christ. What once prevented clear understanding is removed, and through the Holy Spirit, a new life of freedom and transformation begins.

This is grace received. But as God changes us, His grace also becomes something our lives can reflect to others.

THE READING, EXPLAINED

Paul looks back to Moses and the giving of the law.

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai after being in the presence of God, his face reflected God’s glory. The Israelites could not look steadily at his face because of its brightness, and Moses placed a veil over it.

Paul uses this event to explain the difference between the old covenant and the new covenant through Christ.

The old covenant came with glory, but Paul says the ministry of the Spirit comes with an even greater and lasting glory.

He then uses the veil as a picture of spiritual understanding. The veil remains until a person turns to the Lord.

Paul writes:

“But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed.” — 2 Corinthians 3:16

Through Christ, the barrier is removed.

Paul then points to the work of the Holy Spirit:

“And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17

Those who belong to Christ are able to behold the Lord’s glory and are gradually transformed into His image through the work of the Spirit.

WHAT THIS THEME IS POINTING TO

Grace is something we receive from God, but it is not meant to stop with us.

Through Christ, we are brought into a restored relationship with God. The veil is removed, and the Holy Spirit begins the work of transforming us.

That transformation is important.

Christian faith is not simply knowing more information about God. As we follow Christ, the Spirit works within us so that our lives increasingly reflect His character.

We become more patient because we have received patience. We learn to forgive because we have been forgiven. We show mercy because God has shown mercy to us.

We do not give grace in order to earn God’s grace.

We give because we have already received.

WHERE THIS MEETS REAL LIFE

Imagine looking through a window covered with a curtain.

The world outside is still there, and the sunlight has not disappeared, but the curtain prevents you from seeing it clearly.

When the curtain is pulled back, the light enters the room.

Paul’s picture of the veil works in a similar way. Christ removes what separates us from seeing and knowing God clearly.

But the light does not simply help us see.

It changes what it touches.

As we continue walking with Christ, the Holy Spirit works within us. That change should gradually become visible in the way we treat people, respond to difficulties, forgive, serve and love.

The grace we receive begins to shape the grace we give.

ONE THING TO HOLD ONTO

When Christ removes the veil, His grace changes what we see and the Holy Spirit changes how we live.

Lord, thank You for the grace we have received through Christ. By Your Spirit, transform us so that our lives reflect Your love and grace to others. Amen.
