Dear Gen FX,
Wisdom begins with recognising that we still have something to learn.
In Psalm 119, the writer does not approach God claiming to have everything figured out. Instead, he repeatedly asks God to teach him, give him understanding, lead him and turn his heart towards what is good.
This is the posture of a heart seeking wisdom.
It is willing to be taught.
THE READING, EXPLAINED
The passage begins with a simple request:
“Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end.” — Psalm 119:33
The writer wants more than information.
He wants understanding that changes how he lives.
He continues:
“Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart.” — Psalm 119:34
Throughout these verses, the same pattern continues.
Teach me.
Give me understanding.
Lead me.
Incline my heart.
Turn my eyes.
Give me life.
The writer understands that wisdom requires God's guidance.
He also recognises the things that can pull his heart in another direction. He asks God to turn his heart away from selfish gain and his eyes away from worthless things.
This tells us something important about wisdom.
Wisdom is not simply knowing what is right.
It is developing a heart that desires what is right.
WHAT THIS THEME IS POINTING TO
The Bible often connects wisdom with listening to God.
We live surrounded by advice, opinions and information. We can search almost any question and receive an answer within seconds.
But having access to more information does not automatically make us wise.
Biblical wisdom asks a deeper question:
How does God want me to live?
The writer of Psalm 119 understands that God's Word does more than provide rules. It shapes the person who listens to it.
That is why he asks God not only to teach his mind but to direct his heart.
“Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain!” — Psalm 119:36
A wise heart remains teachable.
It is willing to discover that it may be wrong. It allows God's Word to challenge its desires, correct its direction and shape its decisions.
WHERE THIS MEETS REAL LIFE
Think about travelling somewhere unfamiliar with a map.
Having the map with you is useful, but it does very little if you refuse to look at it or continue travelling in the opposite direction.
God's Word can become like that in our lives.
We may own a Bible, hear Scripture at church and know many verses. But wisdom comes when we allow God's Word to direct where we actually go.
Sometimes it confirms the path we are already taking.
Sometimes it tells us that we need to change direction.
That requires humility.
A heart seeking wisdom does not approach Scripture only looking for confirmation of what it already believes. It asks God:
Teach me. Give me understanding. Lead me.
Those are prayers we never become too old, experienced or knowledgeable to pray.
ONE THING TO HOLD ONTO
A wise heart is a teachable heart — one that continually asks God to shape its desires, guide its choices, and lead it through His Word.
CLOSING PRAYER
Lord, give us hearts that seek Your wisdom. Teach us through Your Word, guide our choices, and help us desire what is pleasing to You. Amen.
